Criterion Reflections is David Blakeslee’s ongoing project to watch all of the films included in the Criterion Collection in chronological order of their original release. This fourth season of the podcast features conversations about movies that originally premiered in 1972 and were destined to eventually receive the Criterion imprimatur. In this episode, David departs his usual format to continue an exploration into films directed by Jean-Luc Godard as he transitioned from his nouvelle vague era in 1966-67 into the didactic political cinema he created in collaboration with Jean-Pierre Gorin as part of the Dziga Vertov Group between 1968-1971 – all this as a prologue to his upcoming discussion of Godard and Gorin’s 1972 film Tout va bien and Letter to Jane. For this conversation, David is joined by Jon Laubinger to discuss Le gai savoir, Un film commes les autres, British Sounds (See You at Mao), Le vent d’Est, Lotte in Italia, and Vladimir et Rosa.
